Under City Gas Distribution (CGD) project of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), 1000 households in Bhubaneswar will be equipped with piped natural gas (PNG) which is a safer and cheaper fuel than LPG. This a pilot project under which residential colonies of Nalco and Railways will be given PNG connections in the first phase by December 2018. The Rs 1750 crore CGD project in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, aims at facilitating piped gas in five lakh households. The foundation ceremony of the project is scheduled on 18th March to be held in the presence of union oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the twin cities. GAIL director (projects) Ashutosh Karnatak shared, "Natural gas will be supplied to the cities through the Jagdishpur-Haldia & Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL) popularly known as Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga. This is for the first time cities in eastern India will be connected through gas pipelines." Moreover, in next three to five years, 24 CNG (compressed natural gas) stations will be established in the capital city to provide fuel to around one lakh vehicles and Cuttack is supposed to have 20 CNG stations to fuel 50,000 vehicles.
