City Airport runway to be expanded
The Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has been asked to provide 47 acre for runway expansion of Bhubaneswar airport in Barmunda area. The university authority will hand over the land to GA department, which will then be handed over to the airport authority. The consensus between OUAT, General Administration (GA) department and the airport authority was achieved by providing 42 acre in Sakhigopal and 5-10 acre in Deras area to OUAT in exchange. Currently, the airport has 9,000-ft runway which is not suitable for the bigger flights like Air India’s Airbus A-321 during landing. With focus on the cargo flight operation and more international flights in future, it is being ensured that around 10,000-ft long runway is in place. Thus, the existing runway is being extended by 1000-ft so that Boeing flights with 250-280 passengers can smoothly be operated. This will, in turn, result in flight fares being cheaper.
