Sambalpur to be sports hub of Odisha soon
Sambalpur is going to don the role of sports hub of Odisha, with a sports complex, a beginners' pool and five mini stadiums in the pipeline. Work on a beginner’s swimming pool at the Dr. Jhasketan Sahu Swimming Pool Complex is progressing at a great pace. The five newly constructed mini stadiums at Dengimocha, Themra, Dhankauda, Mandlia and Netaji Subash Chandra Bose College grounds are within the SMC limits. These were funded by the sports department. However, the sports complex project will come up on 18 acres in front of the Hirakud Railway Station in Burla area. The sports complex will include a swimming pool, a kids' swimming pool, water sports facilities, athletes track, a football field, administrative buildings and hostels. Including a College of Physical Education is also being considered. While Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has approved Rs 25 crore for the sports complex project, the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) will do its execution.
