Odisha leads in GPS-enabled mineral vehicles
Odisha becomes the leading state of the country as it has ensured installation of GPS (Global Positioning System) in 35,740 vehicles engaged in transportation of minerals. The aim is to bring transparency in the mining sector while streamlining mining activities. Minister of State for Steel and Mines Prafulla Mallick stated, “We had asked the owners of all vehicles engaged in transportation of minerals to install GPS devices by the stipulated date. Many transporters resisted the move. After initial resistance, the transporters fell in line when they were told that only GPS-enabled vehicles will be permitted to transport minerals.” He claimed that after successful implementation of an IT-based mineral administration -Integrated Mines and Mineral Management System (i3MS), GPS enabled mineral carrying vehicles is next significant accomplishment in the state’s mining sector.
