BMC targets to make all streets LED lit
The BMC is targeting to completely replace conventional street lights with energy-efficient LED lights. Between August and December, the government plans to add another 15,000 LED lights. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already installed 35,000 LED lights since August 2014. The LED lights are energy efficient, they also illuminate better with 5 times higher longevity. According to a BMC officer, "We are saving 70% energy by using LED lights. Our power bills have gone down. We can save around Rs 15 crore a year by installing LED lights." Technical assistance for this project is being provided by a private company chosen by the International Financial Corporation which has signed a 10-year agreement with BMC.As per the agreement, 90% of the revenue earned by energy economy would be taken by the private company and 10% would go to BMC.
