In a historic decision, Odisha slum dwellers to get property rights
In a historic initiative, Odisha will give land rights to slum dwellers and property rights to the people residing in city settlements thus benefitting the slum dwellers of the state. Two ordinances were recently approved by the state cabinet as per which land and property rights will be assigned to around 10 lakh slum dwelling households. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik communicated to the reporters, "The urban poor in slums will get land rights for residential use that are heritable, mortgageable and non-transferable.” This landmark decision will be instrumental in removing the slum dwellers’ continuous fear of eviction and harassment.
