State to have council for development of handlooms and handicrafts sectors
Odisha is going to establish the handlooms and handicrafts development and promotion council though its detail structure is not finalized so far. With its headquarters at Bhubaneswar the council will function under the administrative control of the handlooms, textiles and handicrafts department. The State cabinet has approved a fund of Rs 20 crore during current financial year. The main objective is comprehensive growth of handlooms and handicrafts sectors. Chief Secretary A P Padhi said, "The council will assess the impact of various schemes and programmes being implemented for weavers and artisans and advice the government for framing policies for the handlooms and handicrafts sectors." Improving the livelihood of the families of weavers and artisans, organizing promotional activities such as exhibitions, fairs, conferences etc to improve the market linkages to especially to enhance exports and conducting periodical socio-economic census and database maintenance of Odisha’s weavers and artisans will be the key functions of this council.
