Odisha launches Universal Eye Health Programme
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched Universal Eye Health Programme in Odisha. The first of its kind initiative in India, aims to minimise the number of curable visually challenged persons in Odisha. The State government has allocated a budget of around Rs 600 crores from its own sources on this programme over a period of five years. This programme was launched on the occasion of World Sight Day-2017 where the CM said, “This initiative will go a long way in controlling curable blindness. Vision centres equipped with appropriate eye-care facilities will be established across the state initially at all community health centres and later on at primary health centres or even sub-centre level to cover the entire population.” Under this scheme, all school students will be screened for various vision ailments and wherever necessary free spectacles will be supplied in the school itself. General people suffering from defective near vision will also be provided free spectacles. Besides, a health web portal has also been launched through which interested people can register to have access to the details of Universal Eye Health programme.
