Odisha vouches for GIS-based master plans for nine AMRUT towns
Odisha government has plans to prepare master plans for nine AMRUT towns using Geo Informatics System (GIS). A proposal concerning the same has been presented to the Union Ministry of Urban Development requesting to allocate a budget of Rs 3.76 crore for the project. The nine towns include Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Puri, Bhadrak, Balasore and Baripada. While the Orissa Space Application Centre (ORSAC) will conduct the survey, the master plan would be ready by the financial year 2018-19 if the necessary approvals are attained. The implementation of the master plan will meet the needs of the expected population in 2040. It will ensure specific development of the towns through proper land use, improved traffic and transportation, housing and slum improvement, public utilities, environmental improvement, education, research and other community facilities, plantation, heritage and tourism, management of the natural water bodies, etc. Additionally, the GIS mapping will be effective in tracking the vacant government land and help in generation of revenue from properties in the form of holding tax.
