Body cameras for better traffic surveillance in twin cities
Traffic police personnel in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will now be equipped with body cameras. This will enhance surveillance on traffic rule violators as well as accountability of the traffic force. The mini camera will adorn the uniform of the traffic personnel to capture the live footage and audio of incidents of traffic violations. With higher transparency in the enforcement of traffic regulations, the allegations of public about traffic police misuse of power can also be taken care of. Hundred of such cameras have been procured for the twin cities. However, the body cameras will not be deployed at all traffic posts rather at critical intersections in both the cities. The personnel may not be required to keep the cameras switched on continuously. The twin cities police commissioner Y B Khurania stated, "The aim is to ensure that there is footage of penalty being imposed on commuters who have violated traffic rules for ready and future reference. It will help both the police and people. Since policemen empowered with penalty imposition are above the rank of assistant sub-inspectors, the personnel wearing them can record the proceedings of serving challans on commuters."
