Odisha farmers can focus on adapting climate-smart crop
The farmers in arid parts of Karnataka have already adapted climate change by switching from traditional water-intensive rice, sugarcane and maize cultivation to various types of drought-resistant millet. Given the continuous changes in climatic condition, it has urged the farmers of drought prone district of Hondure village to harvest millet, freeing themselves from the vagaries of weather. In view with this initiation, the farmers of Odisha state can change their age old method of growing rice and maize which relies on the monsoon rains and may shift to growing millet. Various workshops can be organized by the Capital to knowledge them about the positive effects of millet farming. This can be a start towards sustainable cropping practices that respects biodiversity in nature.
