2.7% of City area gets 80% of Smart City fund
It has been analysed that in the Smart City mission eighty per cent of the proposed central government investment is being diverted towards the small well-developed pockets. Ministry of Urban Development data reflect that out of the total Rs 1.31 lakh crore proposed to be spent on the 59 cities from 2015 to 2020, Rs 1.05 lakh crore will be spent towards the Area Based Development (ABD). ABD indicates the areas in the selected cities identified to be ‘smart’ by deploying IT and infrastructure projects like WiFi hotspots, smart lighting, smart streets, zones with multi-modal transit points. Moreover, it has been observed that the pan-city projects got just Rs 26,141 crore. Out of the total area of these urban local bodies, 9,065 sq km(as per Census 2011), the total area identified for ABD in the 59 cities is just 246 sq km, which forms 2.7 per cent. The trend is evident in most selected cities including Bhubaneswar, Pune, Visakhapatnam etc.
