Union Cabinet approves universal minimum wage code bill
A new wage code bill has been approved by the Union Cabinet to ensure a minimum wage across all sectors by combining four labour related laws viz. Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Wages Act, 1936, the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. The proposed legislation will benefit around 4 crore employees all over India. Under this bill, the Centre will be entitled to set a minimum wage across all sectors which must be adhered by the states. The states may opt to go for higher minimum wage in their jurisdiction than what is defined by the central government. The bill expected to be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session, if passed, would ensure a universal minimum wage for all industries and workers, including those getting monthly pay higher than Rs 18,000. Currently, the minimum wages fixed by the Centre and states are applicable to workers getting up to Rs 18,000 per month.
