Mashhad embraces Smart Gas Meters
Iran has launched a ‘smart gas meter’ project using Narrow Band-IoT technology. 5,000 smart gas meters have been installed in the northeastern shrine city of Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi Province. The project has been deployed by the second largest mobile operator MTN-Irancell, and the National Iranian Gas Company as a part of the agreement signed between the two stake-holders in late 2016.Under this, Irancell is responsible for maintaining the connectivity of the gas meters to the network and data transfer surveillance. Additionally, Iran’s Energy Efficiency Organization and Italy’s Centro Elettrotecnico Sperimentale Italiano (CESI) have signed a deal last October, to install smart electricity meters in Iran. This will result in installation of 32 million smart electricity meters across the nation. Smart meters whether gas, electric and water consumption, eliminate the human error leading to higher accuracy. Users have access to information relating to their daily use and instances of excessive consumption. This allows for cost efficiency as well as reduction in peak hours consumption.
