BMC adopts IMMT developed wastewater treatment technology
The Bhubaneswar based CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) has formed a team which has developed a wastewater treatment technology named ‘Constructed Wetlands for treating wastewater’ for treatment of domestic and municipal wastewater in cities which requires minimum capital and no electricity, chemicals or machineries. These constructed wetlands are sustainable wastewater treatment processes for mildly polluted water like sewage which produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from atmosphere. It involves a multi-layered process of adsorption, filtration, sedimentation, biological uptake, degradation, plant uptake, natural aeration and valorisation. The team has applied the technology at premises of CRPF Campus and IMMT. The BMC will conduct a case study on setting up such plants at Salia Sahi and Jadupur on a pilot basis. A technical team of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) led by Mayor AN Jena has surveyed these sites to check the feasibility of setting up such plants. Once it is successfully implemented it can be adopted in other parts of the city as well.
