Planned plantation is on cards for Bhubaneswar
The environment cell of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is mobilizing energy towards turning residential areas of the capital city ‘green’ before the next monsoon. Plans are to plant at least 100 trees in the vacant spaces of each ward. Generally, the corporators identify and prepare a list of the vacant spaces and give it to the environment wing. Environment officer (BMC) Kapilendra Sethy said, "We will plant fast-growing trees and those that can offer shade so that the vacant spaces look green and become shady within five years. If we plan before December, we will be able to plant the trees well before monsoon and prepare for their survival subsequently." Along with Smart City projects, making the city ‘green’ in residential areas and roads is important. The city’s green cover had reduced due to frequent natural calamities. Moreover, the city has grown horizontally and new colonies have come up which necessitates planned plantation.
